What about keeping your distance in popular places? Live streams on the web reveal how crowded it really is this summer. A virtual journey through southern Europe – from Portugal to Spain and Italy to the beaches of Greece. Photos can be deceptive, for example the motifs from the beach in Barceloneta, which is said to be crowded at the end of July. Nobody on Barcelona’s house beach wears a mask. But the pictures of the sensational reports of overcrowded stretches of beach in the media were taken at an earlier point in time. Anyone who even calls up one of the many webcams on Spain or Italy’s beaches will be taught better and see the current situation in this Corona summer: distance is everything. That is why we have listed links to ten tourist hotspots on this page. Barcelona beach In the past few days, photos of the crowded beach in Barceloneta have been shown again and again, where social distancing seems to be a foreign word. In reality it looks very different on the beach promenade. Bay of Palma de Mallorca Drinking bouts at Ballermann and how crowded is the Platja de Palma? A webcam sends a 24-hour live stream from the beach at Ballermann 1. Lloret de Mar in Catalonia This place on the Costa Brava is particularly popular with young people who hang out there to party. The webcam shows how things are going for the party vacation on the beach this year. Tenerife in the Canary Islands The flags flutter in the wind, ferries from the neighboring islands dock in the background, and there is hardly anything going on on the beach promenade. This webcam in the south of Tenerife is in Los Christianos. Spanish Steps in Rome Only a few passers-by are currently walking up Rome’s famous 136 steps to the church of Santa Trinità dei Monti. The special thing about this webcam: The transmission takes place with sound. If you are patient, you can even hear the policeman’s whistle when a tourist wants to sit on the steps. Verona Arena In the summer months an opera is performed every evening in the amphitheater in the Italian city of Verona . But this year there is only a very limited music program. The webcam shows the place in front of the amphitheater, where the props for the changing scenery are usually placed. Jesolo on the Adriatic The city northeast of Venice with its wide sandy beach is particularly popular with German holidaymakers. The webcam with the fisheye lens shows the current situation: The loungers and parasols are set up with a sufficient safety distance. And there are still plenty of loungers available for sunbathing. St. Mark’s Square in Venice One of the main attractions of the lagoon city is the Piazza San Marco. It is usually very busy there: tourists take photos of each other in front of the portal of St. Mark’s Basilica or feed pigeons, which is actually prohibited. Via the webcam, you can not only get an impression of how many visitors the square has right now, but also whether flooding may flood the square. Beach in Crete In the village of Mátala on the south coast of the Greek island of Crete, Zeus is said to have gone ashore in the form of a bull with the Phoenician princess Europe he kidnapped. Today there are a few parasols and vacationers cool off in the waters of the Mediterranean. The webcam is not fixed, but swings left and right. Beach in the Algarve In the south of Portugal, the Algarve stretches with countless bays and sandy beaches. A webcam with a regular change of perspective shows the activity on Peneco Beach via live stream and zooms in and out of certain details.

The German travel warning for Mallorca poses almost unsolvable problems for the tourism industry there. Health Minister Spahn expresses understanding, but remains tough on the matter. Hoteliers are now expecting closings. Some still believe in miracles. Hotel entrepreneurs in Mallorca are prepared for the worst after the German travel warning. “I’m condemned to close. My only customer is Tui. If the hotel is emptied in a week, I have to close in ten days,” the newspaper “Diario de Mallorca” quoted a hotelier in Playa de Palma on Sunday. This area with its many hotels would lose its meaning and importance without the German vacationers. “In a week or ten days everything will be empty here,” the newspaper quotes another entrepreneur. With the German veto against trips to Mallorca, the worst fears would have come true. The newspaper wrote that it was a “death blow” for tourism . A minus of 98 percent The slump in the tourism business is already historic. In the past record year, more than 16 million domestic and foreign holidaymakers came to the Balearic Islands , which also includes Mallorca. The income was more than 16 billion euros. This year earnings were close to zero through the end of May due to the lockdown. From June, holidaymakers from the EU and Schengen countries were allowed to enter again. But only a few came and the income was like a drop in the bucket: almost 43.5 million euros, a decrease of a good 98 percent compared to the same month last year. At the same time, the costs of hotels, restaurants and nightspots designed for mass tourism continue to run. This is not economically viable for long. In normal times, the industry contributes 35 percent to the islands’ economic output. Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) expressed understanding for the difficult situation, but remained tough in terms of risk areas and travel warnings . The minister said on Saturday that he knows what this government decision means for many vacationers, for travel agencies or for Spain. “But unfortunately the number of infections is increasing there, too much.” In the ARD, Spahn emphasized that a travel warning is not a travel ban. You can and should continue your vacation, but be vigilant, keep your distance, observe hygiene rules and wear everyday masks in certain situations. “The virus doesn’t go on vacation. That’s why we have to take good care of each other on vacation.” Package tourists can terminate the travel contract On Friday, the federal government extended the travel warning that had previously applied to some Spanish regions to the entire Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands including Mallorca. Only the Canary Islands are excluded from the travel warning, which allows package tourists to terminate the travel contract free of charge. German holidaymakers are pretty relaxed about the situation. The three friends Sabine, Alex and Renate from Hildesheim only arrived in Mallorca on Saturday morning. “We saw on the Internet yesterday evening that Mallorca is now a risk area. But our bags were already packed, there was no other option,” says 29-year-old Renate. They definitely don’t want to spoil their holiday mood. That could well work, because the Balearic Islands with Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera have not been as empty and relaxed as this year for decades. Canaries are not considered a risk area Local business people tend to be in a bad mood. He would have wished for “more solidarity” from the German side, says Juan Miguel Ferrer, operator of a restaurant on Playa de Palma. He would have found it better if experts from Germany had examined the situation on site instead of just basing their decisions on statistics. After all, a holiday destination like Playa de Palma with lots of bars in the open air is a low-risk area. The statistics of the island’s own government are clear. The number of new infections during seven days is clearly above the limit of 50 per 100,000 inhabitants – that is the most important criterion for the decision whether a region or a country is classified as a risk area. The border will also be torn on mainland Spain, just not in the Canary Islands. The archipelago in the Atlantic is therefore not a risk area and excluded from the travel warning. The regional tourism minister Iago Negueruela practiced optimism. Local media reported that he was convinced that the corona numbers would soon fall and that the restrictions would then be lifted again. The entrepreneur Ferrer is also hoping for a miracle. “If we manage to reduce the numbers again, we hope that the season will be extended and that cyclists and other tourist groups will still come in October,” he said. However, there were initially no signs that the corona numbers were falling and that Germany would soon lift the travel warning again. Corona test after returning According to the German Travel Association (DRV), there are currently around 30,000 German package tourists in the Balearic Islands. However, there is still no overview of how many vacationers wanted to leave early in the next few days, said a DRV spokesman. According to the DRV, all tour operators will cancel planned trips to the destinations affected by the travel warning in the coming days. This is part of the standard procedure after a travel warning, which does not mean a travel ban, but allows package tourists to terminate the travel contract free of charge. For returnees from corona risk areas, it has generally been the case for a few weeks now that they have to report to the health department and provide information about symptoms and a possible corona test. Since last weekend, a mandatory test has been in effect when returning home: If you do not have a negative test result from shortly before departure, you have to be tested after arriving in Germany. That means: Either you can be tested in the holiday country no more than 48 hours before departure and you submit a negative proof in German or English. You have to pay for tests abroad yourself. Or you can have yourself tested after returning to Germany, which is free for three days.
Denti della Vecchia, the white “teeth” are also called the Lugano Dolomites. The rocks are popular not only with climbers, but also with hikers. A tour leads to one of the most modern mountain huts in Switzerland with the best cuisine at its peaked peaks . At the beginning, the more than 600 meters difference in altitude can be covered with the Brè funicular from the Cassarate district. From the mountain station it goes down through the small artist village of Brè and through forest and along a stream west around Monte Boglia to Alpe Bolla at 1129 meters. The benches in front of the hut are a nice place to stop for refreshments (4 hours). Soon the Scenic Trail begins, according to the signs, always following the ridge, which is mostly identical to the border between Switzerland and Italy. The path leads around the cliffs of the Sasso Grande, without having to be afraid of heights, to Capanna Pairolo, a hut at 1349 meters (1: 50h). If you still have enough energy, you can walk in two hours over wide and unwooded slopes to the San Lucio chapel at an altitude of 1542 meters. There are two accommodations there, the Capanna Alpe di Cottino on the Swiss side and the Refugio San Locio on Italian soil with significantly lower prices. Second day of the Ticino trip The next day, the first to climb the 2115 meter high Gazzirola, which dominates the area along the ridge (1: 50h). The hike can be continued more relaxed on the south-western slope of the mountain to Capanna Monte Bar (3h). The mountain hut, which only opened in 2017, is managed by Alessandro Müller. Lugano comes into view again through the large panoramic windows . Another 200 vertical meters through wide grass fields to the summit of Monte Bar (0:45 hrs). Or you can walk over the Caval Drossa to the Motto della Croce observation box and then on to Bidogno down into the valley (3 hours). The descent is much more lonely before reaching Capanna Monte Bar north to Isone (5:30 am). But here the descent can be blocked because of a military training area. Then there is the narrow path over the 1970 meter high pass, the Bocchetta di Revolte to Alpe di Leveno, with a descent to the mountain village of Monte Moneda and through dense deciduous forests to Vellano (6 hours). Prerequisites : good physical condition, surefootedness and elementary ability to orientate yourself. Those who continue to run to Vellano should be in a very good condition.

They once served humans and animals as shelter: cave dwellings under huge rock slabs. In Switzerland, a photographer visited the natural dwellings in which alpine shepherds lived until a few decades ago. No nail can be hammered into the wall so easily here: The rooms are made of solid rock walls, as are the ceilings. These alpine apartments are not buildings made of wood or stone, but caves and grottoes that have only been expanded by human hands. This form of natural accommodation can be found in the entire Alpine region. Especially in higher regions they were used as sheltered overnight accommodation, as pantries, workrooms for food production and as stables for animals. These Costruzioni sotto roccia , constructions under rock, as they are called in Italian, were created centuries ago and are now considered not only as examples of architecture in the mountains, but also document how skillfully the Alpine population was able to exploit the geographical and geological conditions. Especially in Ticino , in the side valleys of the Maggia Valley north-west of Locarno, you can still find these buildings hidden in the landscape, which were often built out of necessity and have been cared for and developed over generations: the Splüi, as they are called there. The term Splüi probably comes from the Latin spelunca for cave On the following pages of the photo series we give you an insight into a Splüi that was still inhabited until the 1980s.
A cockroach in the room, rotten food, a dirty pool – by how many percent can the travel price be reduced after returning from the package holiday? The “Frankfurt List” gives clues. The Germans are known as notorious complainers. Especially when they are on vacation they criticize their accommodation, demand a better room or demand a price reduction. After their return, some people try to take legal action to reclaim part of their travel price if the holiday pleasure has been spoiled by bad food or construction site noise. But a cockroach crawling through the bathroom is not necessarily a travel problem that justifies packing your suitcase early. Always everything in writing In principle, the intermediary travel agency or the travel website cannot be held responsible, only the operator. Small things on site should first be settled with the hotel manager by way of goodwill. If the accommodation does not correspond to the description in the travel brochure, for example if there are no advertised sports facilities, a complaint must be made immediately according to travel law. For a package tour, the local tour guide would be the point of contact. He must first be given the opportunity to remedy the situation. This is the only way for the customer to secure the right to a reduction in the price of the trip, even to termination or compensation. German jurisprudence even requires that vacationers document their complained about defects with photos and written statements from fellow travelers. Therefore you should have the receipt of the complaint letter confirmed by the tour guide. Frankfurt table If his efforts were unsuccessful, the traveler has four weeks after his return to register claims for recourse – by registered mail with acknowledgment of receipt. Since the trip was paid for in advance, the lawyers usually argue about the amount of the repayment. In legal practice, the “Frankfurt table” has proven itself as a guideline: Missing or dirty swimming pool with acceptance: 10-20 percent; monotonous menu: 5 percent; Noise during the day: 5-25 percent.
Vacation on the Côte d’Azur, a city trip to Paris: That wasn’t a problem in the past few weeks despite Corona. The situation has now changed for German vacationers. The following applies to returnees: test and quarantine. The Federal Government’s Tourism Commissioner, Thomas Bareiß, does not rule out a travel warning for all of France. “We have a breathing system,” said the CDU politician on Tuesday in the RTL / ntv program “Frühstart”. There are clear measures according to which a region is declared a risk area, according to Bareiß. “If 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants can be identified in seven days, then you have to react.” The federal government issued a travel warning for the greater Paris area and large parts of the French Mediterranean coast on Monday evening because of the risk of infection . The regions Île-de-France and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur have since been included on the continuously updated list of the federally owned Robert Koch Institute (RKI) as risk areas. Such a classification takes place after a joint decision by the health, foreign and interior ministries. The central criterion for classification as a risk area is the states or regions in which there were more than 50 newly infected people per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days. A travel warning continues. While it is not a travel ban, it is intended to have a deterrent effect. And it has a positive side for consumers: it enables package travelers to cancel bookings free of charge. However, the recently introduced mandatory test for returnees from risk areas is to be abolished and replaced by a new regulation. The federal and state health ministers presented corresponding proposals on Monday after a switching conference. Mask requirement in Paris In the greater Paris area and in the Provence-Alpes- Côte d’Azur region , which is also located in the port city of Marseille, the situation had already worsened last week. The French government had classified Paris and the Bouches-du-Rhône department on the Mediterranean as zones where the virus is actively circulating. This means that the regional authorities can restrict public life there – theoretically, for example by closing restaurants or markets or restricting freedom of movement. In Paris, for example, the mask requirement was massively expanded as a result of the classification – it now also applies in the open air almost in the entire city. In Paris, the number of newly infected people per 100,000 population has risen well over 50 since the beginning of August. However, if you look at the occupancy rate of the intensive care beds, for example, the city has so far been in the green. France was hit particularly hard by the corona pandemic – more than 30,500 people have died so far. The experts are currently particularly concerned that a particularly large number of young people are infected with the virus – but have no or hardly any symptoms. These in turn could infect older people.

Day tourists are allowed to visit Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania again Foreign Office warns of traveling to all of Spain – including the Canary Islands Hamburg fish market should open in October, but only at noon instead of early in the morning The most important travel news about the corona virus in the star ticker . The global spread of the coronavirus and government measures such as border closings are hugely restricting personal mobility and thus travel. The Federal Foreign Office has also issued a travel warning for tourist trips because of the pandemic. Here you will regularly find the latest news on the subject of the corona crisis and travel. From spring 2021, all seven Tui ships are to run again After the slow restart, the cruise operator Tui Cruises wants to offer trips on all ships in its fleet again from spring. “We hope to be on the road again with all seven ships by spring 2021 at the latest, with a little less occupancy and the right health concepts,” said company boss Wybcke Meier of the newspaper “Welt am Sonntag”. After cruises came to a standstill due to the corona pandemic, Tui Cruises had parked almost its entire fleet in the North Sea. Since the end of June this year, the company has been offering trips to the North and Baltic Seas again. This weekend another ship in Greece is supposed to take on guests again. Tui operates the ships “Mein Schiff” with the numbers one to six and the “Mein Schiff Herz”. “As far as the finances are concerned, we have done our homework and will therefore survive this phase with fewer ships and less utilization,” said Meier. Around 60 percent of all employees are still on short-time work. +++ Day tourists can visit Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania again +++ From this weekend on, day tourists can come back to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Because of the corona pandemic, guests from the surrounding federal states have mostly not been welcome since mid-March. Such trips were considered illegal and could be fined up to 2000 euros. VACATION WITH SIDE EFFECTS Air travel at cheap prices in the middle of the corona crisis? That is doubly wrong! It is estimated that companies in the country are losing three to five million euros in turnover per day due to a lack of day-trippers. From the point of view of the state government, the restrictions were an effective tool to slow down the spread of the corona virus. “Thousands of day tourists were already in the country,” said the President of Dehoga Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lars Schwarz. Therefore, the withdrawal of the ban was a long overdue step, which the hospitality industry has long been calling for. +++ Foreign Office warns against traveling to all of Spain +++ Due to the corona pandemic, the Federal Foreign Office has now also issued a travel warning for the Canary Islands, which are popular with German holidaymakers. The federal government is now warning of “unnecessary, tourist” trips to all parts of Spain. “Spain was and is severely affected by COVID-19,” the Federal Foreign Office explains the decision on the website . In the Canaries, the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife are particularly affected. So far, the Foreign Office had already warned against traveling to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands with the popular holiday island of Mallorca. Now this also applies to the Canaries. Returnees must take a free corona test and go into quarantine until the result is negative. As the Foreign Office further announced, the regions of Cantabria, Castile and Léon, La Rioja, Navarra, the Basque Country, the capital region of Madrid and the capital of the Balearic Islands, Palma de Mallorca, are currently affected by the virus. There are therefore strict exit restrictions throughout the country. Discos and night bars are completely closed, restaurants are open until 1 a.m. at the latest. +++ Hamburg fish market should open in October, but only at noon instead of early in the morning +++ The Hamburg fish market was closed for five months due to the Corona crisis – now the traditional market is set to reopen in October. This is at least a concept that the Altona district has developed together with the health authority. Fish, fruit and vegetables should no longer be sold early in the morning as usual, but instead on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Since mid-March, tourists and Hamburg residents have had to do without the 300-year-old Hamburg fish market due to the corona pandemic. Usually around 120 market stalls are set up there. Many night owls went straight to the fish market after an evening in the Kiez. This possibility should no longer exist because the authority feared that the corona rules among the partygoers would not always be observed. The new protection concept provides for a maximum of 500 visitors and 60 dealers. The site is to be fenced off with separate entrances and exits and one-way streets. At the start, 20 security guards should regulate the entry and ensure that the distance rules are observed. +++ Almost 200 passengers have to be in quarantine after their vacation flight +++ After a flight from a Greek island to Great Britain, all approximately 200 passengers and crew members were sent to a two-week quarantine. 16 guests of the vacation plane have already tested positive, the broadcaster BBC reported. According to British health experts, seven of them were most likely already contagious on board. On the flight from the island of Zakynthos to Cardiff (Wales) on August 25, a number of passengers are said to have ignored the corona protective measures. Many would not have worn masks as prescribed; the crew hardly intervened, it was said. The machine was full of “selfish Cov-idiots”, said a woman on the BBC, alluding to the disease Covid-19. The allegations will be followed up closely, the broadcaster quoted a spokesman for the travel company Tui. Many young British people in Greece have a reputation for being partying and drinking a lot of alcohol. +++ Record of new infections: Canaries tremble for special corona position +++ A new record of new infections has been registered in the Canary Islands. The regional health authorities reported 338 new cases within 24 hours on Thursday evening. That’s the highest number since the pandemic broke out in March. The Atlantic islands belonging to Spain must now fear losing their special position and, like the whole country – including the Balearic Islands – being put on the list of risk areas by Germany. The associated travel warning would give the already badly ailing tourism industry, which accounts for around 35 percent of regional income, the “death knell”, as the media warned on Friday. The central criterion for classification as a risk area is in which states or regions there have been more than 50 newly infected people per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days. In the Canaries there are already 79.69. This means that the islands off the west coast of Africa are now in a worse position than many Spanish regions, for which the Foreign Office’s travel warning has been in effect since mid-August. In the Balearic Islands with the Germans’ favorite island, Mallorca, this number is 79.52. +++ Cunard shipping company cancels all cruises until the end of March 2021 +++ The British Cunard shipping company has informed the customers of its three cruise ships long-term: The “Queen Elizabeth” will then be idle up to and including March 25, 2021, for the flagship “Queen Mary 2” all voyages are suspended up to and including April 18, 2021, and the “Queen Victoria” will only resume service after May 16, 2021. “In view of the current recommendations of the Foreign Office and the Foreign Ministry of the United Kingdom as well as the great complexity that the global cruise operation brings with it during the Covid-19 pandemic, the traditional shipping company Cunard is extending the operating break beyond November 2020,” it said in a Tuesday published press release. The 180-year-old traditional shipping company, which is now part of the Carnival Corporation, the largest cruise company in the world, is the first large company in the industry to clearly communicate a one-year forced break due to the corona pandemic.
