Denti della Vecchia, the white “teeth” are also called the Lugano Dolomites. The rocks are popular not only with climbers, but also with hikers. A tour leads to one of the most modern mountain huts in Switzerland with the best cuisine at its peaked peaks .
At the beginning, the more than 600 meters difference in altitude can be covered with the Brè funicular from the Cassarate district. From the mountain station it goes down through the small artist village of Brè and through forest and along a stream west around Monte Boglia to Alpe Bolla at 1129 meters. The benches in front of the hut are a nice place to stop for refreshments (4 hours).
Soon the Scenic Trail begins, according to the signs, always following the ridge, which is mostly identical to the border between Switzerland and Italy. The path leads around the cliffs of the Sasso Grande, without having to be afraid of heights, to Capanna Pairolo, a hut at 1349 meters (1: 50h). If you still have enough energy, you can walk in two hours over wide and unwooded slopes to the San Lucio chapel at an altitude of 1542 meters. There are two accommodations there, the Capanna Alpe di Cottino on the Swiss side and the Refugio San Locio on Italian soil with significantly lower prices.
Second day of the Ticino trip
The next day, the first to climb the 2115 meter high Gazzirola, which dominates the area along the ridge (1: 50h). The hike can be continued more relaxed on the south-western slope of the mountain to Capanna Monte Bar (3h). The mountain hut, which only opened in 2017, is managed by Alessandro Müller. Lugano comes into view again through the large panoramic windows .
Another 200 vertical meters through wide grass fields to the summit of Monte Bar (0:45 hrs). Or you can walk over the Caval Drossa to the Motto della Croce observation box and then on to Bidogno down into the valley (3 hours).
